Paul Siegel's Ode to President Barack H. Obama

What is Obama Liberalism?

New-Deal Liberalism consists of fighting for the rights of the poor, the workers and the powerless against conservatives who favor the rich, business and the powerful. This is easily presented as follows:

LEFT<--|-->RIGHT

However, the political landscape has changed so drastically that this paradigm is no longer useful. President Obama expresses this eloquently:

I don't want to pit Red America against Blue America. I want to be president of the United States of America.

Obama Liberalism consists of negotiating, compromising and cooperating with all factions in order to achieve American goals, as opposed to both LEFT and RIGHT groups fighting only for their own self-interests. This may be expressed by a new political paradigm:

"ALL OF US"<--|-->"US VS.THEM"

Both New-Dealers and Reaganites follow the "US VS. THEM" approach. They are playing for power in a zero-sum game: Either Democrats win and Republicans lose, or Republicans win and Democrats lose. What happens to the country is secondary.

President Obama often finds himself in conflict with both Democrats and Republicans because he is concerned with "ALL OF US," the country as a whole.
