It isn't that I think the recall is a good thing. It is terrible. Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, you should be against it. But it is not bad because we have too much democracy. It's bad because our democracy has been hijacked by sore losers, especially one sore loser who happens to be rich: Representative Darrell Issa.
Issa used tens of millions of his own money to finance the recall campaign. It is obvious today that without his "investment" there would not be a recall today. The recall is not an expression of the people, but an expression of one ambitious rich man: Issa. He paid his "dues" and now he is on the ballot to replace Davis. Issa is buying the election "fair and square." This is democracy?
Issa is ambitious. And so was Caesar. Issa feels a lot of money and a little underhandedness may help him get ahead. According to the L.A. Times, the "Record Does Not Suport All of Candidate Issa's Claims." In plain language, he lies. Here are a few of the lies listed:
- He was Inc's 1994 Entreprenur of the Year
- He worked as a computer R & D specialist in the Army
- He was part of President Nixon's security detail at the 1971 World Series
Furthermore, he was charged twice with car theft and twice with carrying a concealed weapon. He was not convicted in these cases.
The big problem in our democracy is not that we have too much of it, but that money counts more than people. Money is the single most important strangler of our democracy.
