So the Bush administration comes up with a proposal that deprives some working people - firefighters, police officers and nurses, among others - of overtime pay. The Republican House approves it.
This is class warfare? Of course, not. You are only knocking down working people. They are accustomed to it. They know there is no hard feelings.
The Senate goes ahead and votes against this bill 54 - 45, so evidently a few scared Republicans joined the Democrats. To which the White House proclaims that if the Senate version is finally passed, Bush will veto the bill. Is this class warfare? No way. Bush loves the working person. He has said so himself.
President Bush insists that all reasonable people know that there is no money in the budget. As a matter of fact, the budget is in deficit. $500 billion and growing daily. Good citizens of the the U.S. realize that workers need to sacrifice a little to support the war on terror. Removing overtime pay is a small price to pay for the peace of mind that would come to us all when we lick the terrorists.
The rich are sacrificing too. Their tax cuts should have been much bigger. But they will need to get along on the paltry amount they get.
No class warfare. Equal sacrifices by rich and poor alike. The rich give up a bigger tax cut and the poor do without overtime pay. Why are Democrats complaining? They want to stir up class warfare where none exists?
