We Don't Agree, But...

"Make More Friends and Fewer Terrorists"

Former President Bill Clinton, the man from Hope, last Saturday presented a message of hope to counter the pervasive drumbeat of fear eminating from the Bush administration.

Bush never opens his mouth without talking about security and war - as Clinton put it "ideologoy, enemies and attacks."

Bush rules by creating a climate of fear. By scaring the population, he is able to introduce drastic security measures via the Patriot Act and other means, measures that decrease our freedoms. By constantly talking about the "war on terror" he is able to detain people without due process of law. By linking the Iraq war to the "war on terror" he misleads the country into believing - 69% believe it - that the two are related. They are not.

In the midst of all this terror talk, Clinton shows the way to a more peaceful world:

"In a world where you can't kill or jail all your enemies, you've got to make more friends and fewer terrorists."

Beautiful! This statement demonstrates the difference between conservatives and liberals. Conservatives operate through fear. This is why they place so much emphasis on arms, security and war. Liberals operate through hope. They spend their time working on building community, world harmony and peace.

As an example, take President Bush's request for $87 billion to be devoted to the occupation of Iraq. $87 billion is a lot of money, everyone agrees. How would a liberal like Clinton spend it? I cannot speak for Clinton. But look at one possibility. We could give it to the Palestinians as a gift. They could use it to build an economic infrastructure and start building a decent economy.

If we did this we may be able to get a peace process going. Once peace is established in this part of the world it would change the whole dynamic of the Middle East. Other Arab countries will grow their economies. More freedoms will develop. People will stop talking about hate and concentrate on peaceful endeavors. The Middle East will flower once again. Terrorism will recede.

It is ironic that Bush, the believer, talks tough and seeks war, while Clinton, the sinner, talks gently and inspires hope for peace.
