We Don't Agree, But...

Put Robert Novak in Jail

Suppose I visited my local newspaper and told them that a certain individual was an undercover agent for the CIA, what do you suppose would happen? Soon I would receive a visit by an agent of the FBI. Shortly after that I would be in jail. No ceremonies.

And this would be good and just. Because I would have endangered many people both in the U.S. and abroad who had interacted with this person. I would have committed a crime.

So when a journalist named Robert Novak lets everybody know that Joe Wilson, the ambassador who reported that Bush's famous "16 words" of the State of the Union Address were false, has a wife who is an undercover agent in the CIA, what happens? Novak is treated like some kind of hero who is welcomed on all the talk shows. Why? Because he is a journalist. Why is he not condemned? Because he must protect his sources.

Maybe I'm dense, but why should Novak get away with this dastardly deed? He has endangered a CIA operative, hurt the effectiveness of the CIA, threw a monkeywrench into our war on terrorism, and hurt homeland security. Not only was Wilson's wife a CIA agent, her work was related to weapons of mass destruction.

If I would go to jail for spillng the beans about a CIA undercover agent, why not Novak? What makes him so special? Are you telling me there is one form of justice for ordinary citizens and another for journalists? What he did is outrageous. Not only outrageous but dangerous to the security of the U.S. Are you telling me that protecting journalistic sources is more mportant than preventing a breach of security?

Everybody is wasting valuable time running around trying to find out who did the leaking when the one who did the actual damage is in front of us laughing.

Robert Novak is a citizen subject to the same laws I am. Put Robert Novak in jail.
