Clinton: "Just Because I Could"

Former President Bill Clinton was interviewed by Dan Rather yesterday on "60 Minutes" and I was impressed once again with Clinton. Here he was answering questions about why he fooled around with Monica Lewinsky. He did not try to change the subject. He did not offer any excuses. He did find fault with Kenneth Starr. Nevertheless, he stated unequivocally that he had made a huge mistake.

Here's what Clinton said:

"I think I did something for the worst possible reason. Just because I could. And I think that's the most morally indefensible reason that anybody could have for doing anything."

Yes, he made a mistake. A BIG one. But he is not beating around the bush, something he is an expert at. But as this incident shows, Clinton is a man that admits his mistakes and goes on from there.

Contrast Bill Clinton with George W. Bush. Bush made a huge mistake in the way he handled the Iraq mess. I think it was a mistake from the beginning. But even those who were in favor of the Iraq war now see that his handling of the occupation was one horrible botch job. When a reporter asked him some time ago about any mistake he made, Bush was at a loss for words. Bush evidently was thinking:

"What? I make mistakes?"

He could not even imagine such a thing.

Yes, both Clinton and Bush made mistakes. Clinton made a mistake about sex and Bush made a mistake about war. Which is a more far reaching mistake? Bill Clinton admits his mistake and George W. Bush confounds his mistakes with lying.

By saying "Just because I could" Bill Clinton tells us he is a greater man than George W. Bush.
