Karl Rove, the so-called architect, the guy planning the Republican political campaign, just announced that he is confident Republicans will prevail because:
Between now and the election, we will spend $100 million in target House and Senate races in the next 21 days.
President Bush says that the message will be that Republicans are strong on security and the Democrats are weak on security. Pretty simple. This is exactly the way Republicans won in 2004 and 2002. Bush and Rove are confident it would work again.
But it won't. The citizens of our country know now what they did not know before: that they were bamboozled about Iraq, the "war on terror" and the propaganda of fear. They see clearly that invading Iraq has hurt rather than helped us, by producing more terrorists than before. And now, N. Korea (and also Iran) thumbs its nose at us. Some security.
For all these reasons and more, Democrats are optimistic. However, they are "misunderestimating" the Republican Party and Karl Rove. This $100 million is not to be deployed in order to discuss issues, be they security or anything else. This booty is to be deployed in ways that will place doubts in voters minds about the integrity and character of Democratic candidates. After all, is not this Rove's specialty?
A simpler way of putting it is that the time for swiftboating has arrived. Under nice names, such as Economic Freedom Fund, the swiftboaters have begun to do their lying, smearing and character assassination. This is the way they did in Kerry. This is the way Republicans plan to do in Democratic candidates this November.
Democrats: Do not celebrate. In the next 3 weeks, do whatever you can to disclose Republican lies and smears. And when election day nears, join a phone bank - check with MoveOn.org - to bring Democrats to the polls.
If you want change, you must do something about it. Work for it or it will never happen.
