The subject is sex, but the message is "we men are in control."
Have you noticed that in the contraceptives hoopla, the Bishops - all men - were incensed with President Obama's accommodation, while Catholic nuns - all women - were happy. There's more to this conflict than meets the eye. Contraceptives are radically changing the world for women: they can make their own sex choices and can decide for themselves how they will relate to their boyfriends, husbands and men at large.
A group of female legislators in Georgia has decided to fight back. They introduced a bill that will ban men from seeking vasectomies. Yasmin Neal, the author of the bill, said:
"Thousands of children are deprived of birth in this state every year because of the lack of state regulation over vasectomies. It is patently unfair that men can avoid unwanted fatherhood by presuming that their judgment over such matters is more valid than the judgment of the General Assembly, while women's ability to decide is constantly up for debate throughout the United States."
Santorum and other Christianists are fighting a lost cause. Women are escaping from the clutches of men and becoming independent. No biblical pronouncements will change this. The more aware Christianists like Santorum become of this new turn of events, the more panicky they become and the more wild the statements they make.
This is another reason the Republican Party is dying.
Democrats, led by Barack Obama, are inviting women into this new independent world. It starts with contraceptives, but it continues with the many other aspects of women's health guaranteed by Obama's universal healthcare system.
If you're a woman, you can fight back by voting for the reelection of Barack Obama.
