Are Your Visitors Color Blind?
by Paul "the soaring" Siegel

Have you ever thought carefully about your visitors? If you did you would know that if they are male, 8% of them are color blind. What does this mean to you?

I know what it means, because I am in the 8% that is color blind. There are some sites where I can not read the words because the designers chose the wrong color scheme. If I can't read what it says, will it have any impact on me? Of course, not.

If you want to be helpful - helpfulness is the essence of good marketing - you will choose color schemes that all visitors can see.

There are 2 good sites to help you do this: Visibone and British Telecom. Visibone has good literature about color blindness and shows you how to take color blindness into account when you design a website. Essentially, you choose colors in the yellow family and the blue family. This is because most color-blind people have trouble with reds and greens. The site sells cards demonstrating the palette.

British Telecom has more detailed information.

Be helpful to ALL your visitors. Use a color-blind palette to design your website.
