DOING RESEARCH ON THE NET

At one time or another, you want to do a little research. Not scientific research, but information research. Research to obtain answers to your questions, understanding of technical ideas that are bothering you, solutions to problems you have.

The Internet is the ideal place for such research. As a matter of fact it accommodates extremely well the 7 different levels of research, whose scopes vary from the broadest to the narrowest:

  1. THE FIRST STAB
If you are looking for a specific site, product, person, or even idea, the fastest way to start is by searching a portal or search engine. The FIRST-STAB section of the directory offers, not only portals and search engines, but many other types of research aids.

  2. BUILDING BIOGRAPHIES
If you are doing serious research on a given topic, you start by building a bibliography: a list of books and documents covering what other people have done in the subject you want to investigate. The best place to do this is the library. Several libraries and other collections of documents are covered in the BIBLIOGRAPHY section.

  3. INTERVIEWING EXPERTS
After reading some of the literature, you'll soon know who the experts are: they are cited most frequently by other authors.

Once you have names of experts, you may search for them at lists of universities, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and business associations. This is the purpose of the EXPERTS section.

  4. READING PUBLICATIONS & PARTICIPATING IN DISCUSSION GROUPS
The ideas of experts are disseminated through publications and data bases. The EXPERTISE section covers such literature. It also covers less technical publications, such as newspapers, magazine, and newsletters.

Many of these ideas take on life when discussed in news groups, mailing lists and other forums. By joining the discussion, you may gain a much better understanding of the subject matter.

  5. VISITING WEBSITES - for Services
Following the previous steps may often lead you to websites dealing with information about services related to your quest. The SERVICES section covers such this area, especially services of concern to executives and entrepreneurs.

  6. VISITING WEBSITES - for Products
The previous steps may lead you to websites discussing or selling products related to your quest - the PRODUCTS section.

  7. VISITING WEBSITES - in a Given Region
A great deal of information is organized according to geographical areas. If you can't find what you are looking for by searching subject areas, try the REGIONAL section.
