WHY AMERICANS ARE TERRIFIED OF TERRORISM
Since the huge shock of 9/11 we Americans seem to be afraid of more things than ever before. We avoid big targets like the Empire State Building and crowded venues like Hollywood Bowl. At work we prefer not getting a foreign assignment, especially in an Arab country. As parents, we are scared to death trying to insure the safety of our children. We are nervous around foreign visitors and spend more of our vacations closer to home. When Homeland Security changes the color code from yellow to orange and issues an extremely vague warning messaage, we are upset and frustrated.
The frustration is due not so much to our new vulnerabilties, as they are to our belief that there is nothing we, as individuals, can do. This is wrong on 2 counts:
- We are not that much more vulnerable than we have been before 9/11
- There is a great deal each of us can do
